Frequently Asked Questions Best of Peru in 15 Days: Lima, Nazca, Arequipa, Cusco and Machu Picchu
Why is this called the "Ultimate" Expedition?
This itinerary addresses the "Triad of Biodiversity." Most tours stick to the Andes. This one drops you into the deep Amazon Rainforest (usually Tambopata), takes you to the depths of the Colca Canyon, and hikes you over the high passes of the Classic Inca Trail. It covers the complete spectrum of Peruvian geography in a little over two weeks.
What role does the Colca Canyon play?
The Colca is your "acclimatization theater." Before you tackle the Inca Trail, you need to adjust to the altitude. The Colca Canyon allows you to do this while witnessing the flight of the Andean Condor and relaxing in volcanic hot springs. It prepares your lungs for the trek ahead while offering stunning views of pre-Inca terraces.
How does the Amazon portion (Puerto Maldonado) fit in?
Usually placed at the beginning or end of the trip, the Amazon segment is a shock to the senses. You will navigate the Madre de Dios River by motorized canoe to reach an eco-lodge. Here, the focus is on wildlife: macaws at clay licks, caimans on the riverbanks, and the deafening, vibrant sounds of the jungle that contrast sharply with the silence of the high Andes.
Is this the "Classic" 4-Day Inca Trail?
Yes, this is the main event. Unlike the train options or alternative treks, this itinerary includes the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail. You will walk the original stone paths laid by the Incas, camping at archaeological sites that are inaccessible by road. It is a pilgrimage, not just a hike, requiring permits booked months in advance.
What makes the arrival at Machu Picchu special on this tour?
Because you are hiking the Classic Trail, you arrive at the citadel through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). This is the only way to see Machu Picchu reveal itself from above at sunrise, just as the Inca nobility did. It is an emotional, exclusive entrance that train passengers do not get to experience.
How does Lake Titicaca fit into such an active schedule?
The visit to Puno and Lake Titicaca serves as a cultural bridge between the physical challenges of the Colca and the Inca Trail. Navigating to the Uros Floating Islands and Taquile Island allows for a slightly slower pace, focusing on the human history of the Altiplano and the textile traditions of the lake dwellers.
How physically demanding is this 16-day trip?
It is demanding (Level 4/5). You are combining the humidity and heat of the Amazon with the freezing nights of the Inca Trail camping. The Inca Trail involves crossing "Dead Woman's Pass" at 4,200m (13,800 ft). You need to be in good cardiovascular shape and mentally prepared for camping and varied climates.
Who is the ideal traveler for this expedition?
This is for the "All-In" Adventurer. It is perfect for those who know they might only visit Peru once and want to leave no stone unturned. If you are willing to trade hotel luxury for jungle lodges and tents in exchange for the most authentic experience possible, this is your itinerary
